Guides/Pet
These machines scoop so you don’t have to. Closed globe, open-top, or a rake over a tray — the cat has to accept it, or none of the ribbons matter.
Updated August 2026
A litter robot is a chore machine. It is not a companion, and it is not Loona. After the cat leaves, it sifts clumps into a drawer or rakes them into a tray so you empty a bin instead of scooping daily. You will still buy litter. You will still deep-clean the globe. You will still introduce the cat, and some cats will refuse it.
Budget for the extras. Liners, carbon filters, crystal trays, and branded bags are the ongoing cost. Two cats fill a drawer faster than the brochure. If the listing is a $90 no-name clone with a five-star handful of reviews, it is not in this aisle.
Closed globes (Litter-Robot 4 and 5 Pro, PETKIT Purobot Max Pro 2 / Max 3 / Ultra, PuraMax 2, Casa Leo, CATLINK Young) hide the mess and usually smell better. They look like a cave. Timid cats and very large cats sometimes will not go in. Litter-Robot is the repairable US-support globe; PETKIT is more camera and a smaller bed.
Open-top boxes (PETLIBRO Luma, Neakasa M1 Plus, CATLINK Open-X, PetPivot, Furrytail, Meowant) are closer to a regular pan with a robot under it. Easier for a cat that likes to see out. More tracking onto the floor, and you see the clumps until it cycles.
Rake-and-tray machines (PetSafe ScoopFree Crystal Pro and Complete Plus, Pet Zone Smart Scoop) are a different product. A rake pushes waste into a disposable tray. Cheap to buy, trays forever. Crystal Pro is uncovered; Complete Plus is covered with an app. SmartSpin is the PetSafe that actually rotates. CatGenie A.I. is the other outlier — it flushes to a drain.
One ordinary cat, want the default: Litter-Robot 4. That is Wirecutter’s top pick, Consumer Reports’ Editor’s Choice, and The Spruce’s overall. The Whisker app is the one WIRED still likes. Floor space and a $699 globe are the cost.
Want cameras and health nags: Purobot Max Pro 2 is WIRED’s overall and Wirecutter’s data pick. Ultra adds auto-packing at about $800. Litter-Robot 5 Pro is Forbes’ and Cats.com’s overall — dual cameras, sold by Whisker, not on Amazon, and Wirecutter bounced off the app. Do not buy 5 Pro because it is newer. Buy it if you want those cameras and will deal with Whisker.
Skip the camera tax: PuraMax 2. WIRED’s basic pick, The Spruce’s odor pick, often the PETKIT people actually keep. Max 3 is the current Max-body without the Pro camera.
Cat that hates caves, or a big cat: Luma (Wirecutter uncovered, Forbes timid), Neakasa M1 Plus (The Spruce large-cat), HomerunPET CS106 if the cat is huge and you will live with few Amazon reviews, or Open-X (Wirecutter’s budget open-top). PetPivot is WIRED’s no-app cheap open-top.
Colored prize ribbons are independent 2026 roundups: Wirecutter, WIRED, The Spruce, Forbes, Consumer Reports, Cats.com. Each list is always the same color. Hover a ribbon for the name. Gold Highly rated is Amazon owners only: enough reviews that the average is clearly in the 4s, not a mixed 4.0 and not a handful of fives. A ribbon cannot grant it.
They do not pick one winner. Litter-Robot 4 is the overlap — six lists. 5 Pro sits on three (not Wirecutter). Purobot Max Pro 2, PuraMax 2, Luma, and PetSnowy sit on two. Neakasa, Crystal Pro, Open-X, Ultra, PetPivot, Complete Plus, SmartSpin, Smart Scoop, Casa Leo, CatGenie, HomerunPET, and CATLINK Young sit on one each. Wirecutter’s top pick is still LR4; WIRED’s overall is Purobot Max Pro 2; Forbes’ overall is 5 Pro. Lesure had a WIRED budget-with-app slot and no Amazon box, so it is not here.
Most homes, closed box: Litter-Robot 4. Camera globe: Purobot Max Pro 2. Same job, less money, skip the camera: PuraMax 2. Open-top, timid or large cat: Luma or Neakasa M1 Plus. Open-top on a budget, no app: PetPivot. Open-top on a budget, and you trust Wirecutter more than Amazon volume: Open-X. Tray-and-rake under $150: Crystal Pro. Whisker cameras and you will buy direct: 5 Pro. If the cat will not use it, none of these are a bargain.
The ones this guide keeps naming. Ribbons are 2026 lists; hover a ribbon for the publication and the slot they used. Cards still go to Amazon.
